Anthropic buys biotech startup Coefficient Bio for $400m

Anthropic has acquired Coefficient Bio, a stealth biotech AI startup, in a deal reported to be worth around US$400 million in stock. The price was reported by The Information.

The acquisition follows Anthropic’s move into life sciences, including its earlier announcement of Claude for Life Sciences for research use cases.

Coefficient Bio was founded around eight months ago by Samuel Stanton and Nathan C. Frey, who previously worked on computational drug discovery at Genentech’s Prescient Design.

Around 10 Coefficient Bio staff are expected to join Anthropic’s health and life sciences team.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Why a $400 million price tag for a tiny, eight-month-old startup can add up

  • Coefficient Bio operated in stealth, had no public product, and brought in no revenue at the time of the deal 1.
  • Anthropic bought a team of about 10 people and folded them into its health and life sciences group 1.
  • co-founder Nathan C. Frey won an ICLR Outstanding Paper Award in 2024 for research on generative modeling for drug candidate discovery 1.
  • For Anthropic, the purchase works out to about 0.1% dilution, which keeps the ownership hit small while backing talent that could open a large life sciences market 1.

The deal opens a new battleground in AI biology

  • The move pushes Anthropic deeper into life sciences after its Claude for Life Sciences announcement aimed at research use cases 1.
  • It also raises pressure on Google DeepMind’s Isomorphic Labs and OpenAI’s collaboration with Moderna as each works to place its models inside drug R&D workflows 1.
  • Anthropic’s ambition goes past molecule design toward an “AI scientist” style system that can draft research plans and manage clinical strategies, which Coefficient Bio’s platform was described as enabling 1.
  • Across the industry, teams have talked publicly about “lab-in-the-loop” systems where AI proposes ideas and labs test them, including work discussed in connection with Genentech 2.
