Anthropic eyes up to 3.5b from Japanese investors in IPO

AI lab Anthropic plans to sell up to US$3.5 billion of shares to Japanese investors as part of its US initial public offering, according to a November 2 filing.

The new shares will help fund working capital, operating expenses, and capital expenditure, the filing said.

The filing did not disclose the IPO’s size or valuation. Some investors had discussed valuing Anthropic at about US$1.5 trillion.

That would be far above the US$183 billion post-money valuation Anthropic announced for its series F round, in which it raised US$13 billion.

The filing also outlined plans to spend up to US$567 billion on compute.

Japanese investors secured US$2.2 billion of shares in SpaceX’s June IPO, which raised US$75 billion in total.
