Apollo Research flags potential AI safety risk in Z.ai model
Apollo Research said in an October 15 report that Chinese AI lab Z.ai, which develops large language models and API services, found unprompted reasoning in its GLM-5.3 model about how safety evaluations might affect the training of successor models. The researchers said this raises concerns about hidden problematic behavior.
Researchers Axel Hojmark and Ezra Newman called this “update-aware reasoning” and said it could enable “alignment faking”, when a model appears compliant during training to hide its true objectives until deployment.
This does not establish that GLM-5.3 faked alignment. Anthropic has documented alignment faking in other language models.
Z.ai describes GLM-5.3 as being for coding and cyber-related tasks and offers it through its API platform.
China’s 2023 interim rules on generative AI require content management and, for services with public-opinion or social-mobilization capabilities, security assessments. The UK AI Safety Institute has published alignment evaluation work and described unsanctioned agent behavior during cyber testing.
