Google commits $160m to water infrastructure for MY data center
Google said it will provide US$160 million for shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, to support local communities and its planned data center campus in Port Dickson.
The company is working with the state government and water utility Syarikat Air Negeri Sembilan Sdn Bhd, It has appointed Gamuda Berhad, a Malaysia-based engineering and construction company, to build an off-river storage reservoir and water treatment plant.
After completion, Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan Incorporated, a state statutory body that holds assets, will own the facilities.
The plant will be able to supply 65 million liters of drinking water a day for public use and Google’s campus. Google was also reported to have bought 389 acres for data center development.
Negeri Sembilan has faced scheduled water disruptions tied to maintenance and upgrade works. Water use by data centers is also drawing scrutiny in Malaysia’s approval process for such projects.
