Google plans $15b Malaysia data center push to meet AI demand

Google plans to invest US$15 billion in Malaysia in 2027 and 2028 to expand its data centers and cloud operations, citing AI-driven demand for digital infrastructure.

The company said it will build new computing hubs and fund water security, power generation, and training for Malaysians.

Earlier this week, Google announced US$160 million for shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan, a state south of Kuala Lumpur, to support its planned data center operations and local communities.

Malaysia has attracted data center investments from Oracle, Amazon, Alibaba, and ByteDance, helped by lower costs, relatively reliable infrastructure, and proximity to Singapore.

The country has emerged as Southeast Asia’s main data center hub as tech companies seek more storage and processing capacity for AI services.

Google said construction of the new campuses would add US$1.1 billion to Malaysia’s economy and support more than 37,000 local jobs a year.
