🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

GoTo profit milestone with uneven segments

  • GoTo Group, an Indonesian tech group, posted adjusted pre-tax profit of Rp62 billion (Rp is Indonesian rupiah). The filing does not say which units are in the black across Gojek (ride-hailing plus on-demand app), Tokopedia (ecommerce marketplace), or GoTo Financial (payments with financial services). The marketplace service fee revenue of Rp211 billion does not explain the swing without take-rates (the percentage of transaction value the platform keeps) or incentive spending across rides and payments.
  • Gross transaction value, or GTV, grew 43% year over year to Rp102.8 trillion. It sums up the value of orders on the platform. Without segment unit economics (profit per transaction) or contribution margins (revenue minus variable costs per ride, order or loan) investors cannot judge if profit holds or if cost cuts did the work.

Cloud and AI firms can plug into GoTo AI push

  • GoTo is rolling out a large language model with an internal AI platform across its network to lift efficiency. With 61.1 million annual transacting users in Indonesia, the scale gives cloud infrastructure firms and AI software shops room to pitch. Offers include inference cost optimization (reducing the compute cost of running models in production) or vector databases (databases for similarity search on AI embeddings). They can also bring Machine Learning Operations tools, or MLOps tools tailored to Bahasa Indonesia (the Indonesian language). The finance arm moved to Alibaba Cloud Jakarta data centers 1, the Alibaba Group’s cloud computing unit with in-country facilities. That position lets it deepen support, while rivals pursue add-on links.
  • AI consultancies can team with clouds on joint sales (co-sell with cloud providers) for model fine-tuning, real-time personalization engines, or fraud detection systems. Check GoTo’s cloud stack (its mix of cloud services and providers) from public filings to decide on add-on fits instead of a rip-and-replace pitch.
