Indian gov’t backs $32m series A of quantum startup QpiAI
Indian quantum computing startup QpiAI has secured US$32 million in a series A funding round co-led by the Indian government and Avataar Ventures.
The funding values the company at US$162 million and is part of India’s US$750 million National Quantum Mission, launched in 2023 to boost quantum technologies.
QpiAI is one of eight startups selected to receive initial grants and has built India’s first full-stack quantum computer, QpiAI-Indus, featuring 25 superconducting qubits.
Founded in 2019, QpiAI focuses on integrating quantum computing with AI for use in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and finance.
It plans to launch a 64-qubit quantum computer by November 2025, with customer access expected in mid-2026.
The company employs around 100 people, including 25 PhDs, and operates in India, the US, and Finland.
QpiAI also plans to establish local quantum hardware manufacturing by 2026 and expand into Singapore and the Middle East.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Rare early profitability in quantum computing sector
QpiAI’s reported profitability stands out in an industry where most companies operate deep in the red during technology development phases.
The company has maintained EBITDA profitability for three consecutive years with impressive 60% gross margins and 20-30% net margins according to CEO Nagendra Nagaraja 1.
This financial performance contrasts sharply with the norm in quantum computing, where most startups require massive investment runways before commercialization.
QpiAI’s valuation jumped from $30 million post-money in its 2024 pre-Series A round to $162 million in this latest funding—a 440% increase in just over a year 1.
This growth trajectory suggests the company has demonstrated commercial viability earlier than typical for the quantum sector, potentially through its hybrid AI-quantum approach.
