NTU, VFT launch $11.7m lab for grid-scale batteries

Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and VFlowTech (VFT), a Singapore-based energy storage company and NTU spin-off, have launched a joint lab backed by S$15 million (US$11.7 million) over four years to develop vanadium redox flow batteries for grid-scale storage.

The lab will work on battery stacks, cooling systems, power conversion, and AI-based monitoring to improve safety and support the growing use of renewable power. They added that new designs could later be tested and integrated into commercial energy storage systems.

The lab was launched at the Asia Clean Energy Summit in Singapore and will also study vanadium recovery from industrial waste and other sources, which could reduce costs.

VFT was founded in 2018 and raised US$20.5 million in 2025.
