Temasek-backed venture firm leads $13.5m for power grid startup
Gridcare, a startup focused on power grid optimization, has raised US$13.5 million in a seed funding round.
The round was led by Xora, a Temasek-affiliated venture firm, with participation from Acclimate Ventures, Aina Climate AI Ventures, Breakthrough Energy Discovery, Clearvision, Clocktower Ventures, Overture Ventures, Sherpalo Ventures, and WovenEarth.
The company addresses the growing challenge of securing electricity for data centers, which often face delays due to limited grid capacity.
Gridcare uses generative AI to map the grid, forecast changes, and identify untapped capacity.
It factors in fiber optics, natural gas, water, extreme weather, permitting, and local sentiment.
The funding will support its expansion and strengthen its matchmaking services.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The soaring power demands of AI are reshaping the utility landscape
Data centers currently consume approximately 6-8% of total U.S. annual electricity generation, with projections showing this will surge to 11-15% by 2030 due to AI and cloud computing growth 1.
This dramatic increase is already visible, with U.S. electricity demand rising 1.8% in September 2024 alone, largely attributed to data center expansion 1.
For context, data centers collectively consume about 416.2 terawatt hours annually, exceeding the entire electricity usage of countries like the United Kingdom 2.
Utilities are struggling to keep pace, with record capital expenditures of US$174 billion in 2024, of which 42% is allocated to transmission and distribution infrastructure improvements 1.
This demand surge is forcing utilities to revise their integrated resource plans while raising wholesale electricity prices, projected to increase by 19% on average between 2025 and 2028 1.
The situation is particularly challenging because data center power requirements are concentrated in specific regions, creating localized grid constraints that companies like Gridcare are addressing through innovative approaches.
2️⃣ States are developing new regulatory frameworks to manage data center impacts
