Travis Kalanick’s Atoms raises $1.7b for robotics expansion

Atoms, a robotics and industrial automation company founded by Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick, said on October 27 that it raised US$1.7 billion in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz.

The funding will support its robotics expansion, including planned automation at KitchenBASE sites in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and Australia.

The company, which owns CloudKitchens, was rebranded as Atoms as it expands from food infrastructure into robotics. KitchenBASE is part of Atoms Food.

Other investors in the round included Uber, Bain Capital, and Fifth Wall. The financing will also add Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Ben Horowitz to Atoms’ board.

Atoms said the funding will help it expand robotics across food, mining, and transport. The company did not identify specific mining or transport customers.
