OpenAI projects $13b revenue in 2025, reaching $174b by 2030

OpenAI expects its revenue to exceed US$13 billion in 2025, up from US$3.7 billion in 2023.

The company forecasts rapid growth, with revenues reaching US$125 billion by 2029 and US$174 billion by 2030.

OpenAI estimates its expenses over the next four years will total US$46 billion, with positive cash flow expected to begin in 2029.

Currently, OpenAI generates most of its income from ChatGPT, which is projected to contribute US$8 billion (61.5% of total revenue) this year.

Future revenue will primarily come from AI agents and other upcoming products, but ChatGPT is still expected to generate US$50 billion in revenue by 2029, about 40% of total income.

OpenAI is exploring monetization strategies, including advertising and commissions on transactions facilitated by ChatGPT or AI agents.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ OpenAI’s projected growth outpaces historical tech giants

OpenAI’s revenue trajectory from $3.7 billion in 2023 to a projected $174 billion by 2030 represents one of the fastest scaling curves in business history.

This seven-year growth path would far exceed Meta’s early growth rate, which took 14 years to grow from founding to $100 billion in revenue1.

The projection marks a dramatic acceleration from OpenAI’s more modest estimates just 15 months ago, when the company was targeting only $1 billion in revenue by 20242.

If achieved, this growth would make OpenAI one of the fastest companies to reach $100+ billion in revenue, surpassing even Apple, which needed about 35 years to reach that milestone.

The aggressive projections come despite high operational costs, with OpenAI expecting to incur $46 billion in expenses over just the next four years before achieving positive cash flow.

2️⃣ AI infrastructure costs create massive barriers to entry

OpenAI’s financial projections reveal the extraordinary capital requirements for leading AI development, with decades of business history showing few examples of companies willing to sustain years of multi-billion dollar losses.
