The Unity engine continues to fire on all cylinders ahead of the release of version 5.0. Nowhere is this more evident than in Korea. Today, Unity Korea and Korean publisher NHN Entertainment announced a “global games business alliance,” as reported by Asia Gyeongjae.
With the announcement of the strategic partnership signed by Unity and NHN, the companies highlighted that NHN uses Unity for about 60 percent of its games already. That’s a split right on the mark with Korea as whole, when it comes to the engine’s share of the top grossing 3D mobile games, which Unity also cites as 60 percent. This trails China and Japan, where 75 and 70 percent of the top-grossing 3D mobile games make use of the Unity engine respectively. That’s well ahead of Unity’s stats for the United States, which are at 50 percent.
If Unity has other partnerships planned, one can expect to see these numbers rise even more. They also announced Unity BI earlier this month, which seems to be part of a plan to help smaller developers in Korea and elsewhere, presumably throughout the 22 countries where Unity already has a presence. BI stands for “brand identity.”
The company will unsurprisingly have a presence at both the Korea Games Conference in Seoul, and G-STAR in Busan later in November.
Games in Asia will attend G-Star, so we’ll be on the lookout for anything interesting on the Korean games front, including Unity developments. Given pre-orders for Unity 5.0 end on November 13, a week ahead of G-Star on November 20-23, we can expect to hear a lot about that at the event.
